The town of Inhambane
The town of Inhambane, 500km north of Maputo, can be reached by tar road although a 4×4 may be necessary to get to some of the resorts (please see resort information). The statue of the famous Portuguese traveler, Vasco da Gama, is to be seen in Inhambane! There is also a brand new supermarket in Inhambane for all your needs! It is one of the oldest towns in Mozambique, dating back to the 10th century and the Arab traders.
Coconut Palms
The beautiful landscape surrounding the town Inhambane is dominated by thousands of coconut palms – you’re really in the tropics now! Coconuts are sold around every corner, so you can enjoy some fresh coconut milk in the shade of a palm tree on the white sandy beaches.
Architecture
It was in 1534 that the Portuguese established a permanent trading post. The atmosphere and architecture in the town reflect this exciting and diverse history. Inhambane is served by an airport and a port and has petrol stations, banks, public phones, shops, markets, a bus terminus and a museum. Sidewalk cafes are dotted along the narrow streets. The dowie also do daily trips to Maxixe – worth your while!

The town itself is set on the bay of Inhambane, looking across to Maxixe. Enjoy a drink at the harbour whilst watching the dhows cruise across the bay. It is possible to hire a dhow to sail you around the bay or up to the Linga Linga Nature Reserve if you wish. This fascinating area used to be a whaling station, but whaling it is now the home to some of the last remaining dugong in Southern Mozambique.
Dolphins and Whales
There is also the opportunity for dolphin and whale watching safari’s in the Indian ocean.

Coast Line
This long stretch of coast line is by far the most developed in Mozambique as far as tourism is concerned. It is a great area for snorkeling, fishing and surfing.

How I wish this was the first place I ever stayed at in Barra – one thing I sure do know is I will never stay anywhere other than at Shibumi.2013 – My best Christmas ever! We had an awesome time staying at Shibumi – the lodge itself is spectacular. The rooms are homely and the air-cons are heavenly in the extreme Barra heat.It is a stone throw away from the sea and the swimming pool was great for late afternoon sundowners and fast dips to cool down.Couldn’t have asked for a better holiday destination. This holiday was a special one because I got engaged – it couldn’t have been more amazing – the how, the where and the with who was all PERFECT.Tannie Hantie en Oom Bart, julle maak Shibumi die lekker plek wat dit is. Tannie Hantie – a master of all trades; reg gestaan met die champagne na die verlowing en die aand afgesluit met ‘n heerlike Kers ete.Baie dankie vir ‘n great tyd.
